United Way Oxford is an organization that embraces change and opportunity; in an ever-changing world, we have been able to thrive and remain a relevant leader because we are willing to be nimble, listen, learn and adapt. Throughout, we hold close our core values to guide our efforts:
- Equity and Belonging
We cherish diversity, advocate for inclusion, and promote a community where everyone feels they belong.
- Leadership and Collaboration
We champion shared leadership and embrace collaboration to achieve greater impact together.
- Compassion and Empathy
We model compassion and empathy, ensuring our actions reflect care and understanding.
- Learning and Innovation
We commit to continuous learning and embrace innovation to meet evolving community needs.
- Humility and Integrity
We act with humility and integrity, building trust through transparency and accountability.
- Volunteerism and Community Engagement
We celebrate the power of volunteerism and foster meaningful community engagement.
I share this with you now as we are in a time of transition – an exciting, energizing time filled with endless possibilities and a new Strategic Plan to guide us forward. As we embrace this next chapter, we want to ensure that we have a full Board complement, made up of individuals who reflect our community, who care deeply for our work and share our mission of strategically investing in resources and relationships to meet today’s needs while advancing lasting social change in our community for tomorrow. To accomplish this, we are seeking individuals to fill upcoming Board vacancies. If you are interested in joining an engaged and caring group of volunteers, or would just like to learn more about the commitment and expectations, please reach out to chat. I would be happy to start the conversation. Once you submit an application, the Board Development Committee will meet with you, as they wish to have their slate of nominees finalized by August for presentation at the AMG in September. Summer is finally here! There is so much to see and do across Oxford all summer long, and it is a wonderful time to build connections, meet new people, visit a neighbour and enjoy social activities. Climate change means that summer also brings extreme weather – heat, humidity, storms and more. Those extremes can be very unhealthy for individuals with compromised health, seniors, young children, people living in poverty and those who experience homelessness. Please keep an eye out for those who are more vulnerable to the negative impact and lend a helping hand if you can.
And not to wish the summer away, but back-to-school is just around the corner, and many of our local families need your help. The high cost of living is making it increasingly challenging for many families to make ends meet. Oxford Supplies4Students is a simple and direct way to help – your financial support will provide registered students with help to shop for the school supplies they need. United Way, along with our collaborative program partners, fundraise specifically for this unique program. Visit www.unitedwayoxford.ca/supplies4students/ to donate directly to Oxford Supplies4Students.
I hope that you take time to enjoy some of Oxford’s beautiful outdoor spots this summer – vacationing in our own backyard is good for the community, the economy and the environment. Check out www.tourismoxford.ca for great suggestions and unique experiences!
Cheers,
Kelly Gilson
