Creating stronger communities starts with the simple act of caring.
As I wrap up the first month in my new role as Executive Director, it feels like a great time to reflect. I’m reflecting on this month, the past 6 months of transition before Kelly retired, and the 10+ years I have been part of United Way Oxford’s work.
Every day, I have the privilege of seeing what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose. Whether it’s donors making a gift, volunteers giving their time, community partners delivering essential programs, or individuals reaching out for support, I am reminded that meaningful change happens when people care enough to act.
Today, Macy asked me what my favourite thing is about working at United Way Oxford. My answer came easily: it’s the people and the relationships. I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with our staff, donors, volunteers, community partners, and the individuals and families who benefit from local programs and services. These relationships are at the heart of everything we do.
An important role of United Way is not only to invest in programs, but also to help our community better understand the challenges and opportunities around us. We have the privilege of gathering community knowledge, sharing what we learn, and helping to shift mindsets about the issues facing Oxford County. When people understand the needs around them, they are more likely to become part of the solution.
There is no question that community needs are higher than ever. This year, funding requests are about 1.7 times greater than what we currently have available to invest. We have received many strong applications from organizations doing important work, and the need is significant.
Yet despite these challenges, I remain hopeful.
Reflecting on the years that I worked in fundraising, I have witnessed the incredible generosity of this community time and time again. As donations begin to come in for our annual campaign, we’re seeing individuals choose to give a little more when they’re able – every gift matters. Every act of generosity helps move us closer to meeting the growing needs in our community.
The most complex challenges facing our communities cannot be solved alone. They require all of us to work together. Our team is working hard to close the funding gap and ensure important local programs receive the support they need, but we can’t do it without your help.
With the support of our donors, volunteers, workplaces, and community partners, we can build momentum for the work ahead. Together, we can continue creating a stronger, more caring Oxford County where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Thank you for being part of that journey.
