Georgie’s Story

Georgie’s Story
“I knew I wanted to have the same impact that Karen had on me, giving me the confidence and support I needed through those early years.” – Georgie, United Way Program Participant

As a young girl, Georgie found mentorship at a community program. Now, she shows her local love by mentoring Robyn and providing her with new opportunities and a deep, lasting friendship.

“I was 6 years old and moved to a new city with my mother and siblings. I was 8 when I was matched with a mentor in Woodstock through Big Brothers Big Sisters. I was so excited to spend time together, just the two of us, and build memories that I still cherish to this day. Those years that we spent together were the best times of my childhood. Even once we had phased through the program, Karen stayed in touch and has always been a part of my life – even attending my wedding and being there for the birth of my two sons.

I have always been community minded, but once my children grew, I knew I wanted to have the same impact that Karen had on me, giving me the confidence and support I needed during those early years. I wanted to make a difference in my community, even if it was through positively impacting the life of just one child. Reading Robyn’s story, I saw many parallels between us and I was hopeful that it would be a good fit for both of us. I’m thankful for the chance I now have to build a relationship with Robyn and support her the way that Karen supported me. It feels like my path has come full circle.

I’m thankful for that resource and the relationship I’ve had with Karen throughout my life. The mentoring program that is supported by United Way Oxford, had a positive impact on my life. I’m glad for their support, so that these programs exist for the youth in our community.”

United Way Oxford invests in programs that foster self-confidence, leadership and skill development in our youth. Programs that help youth make connections like the ones between Karen and Georgie – and now Georgie and Robyn – and provide the support needed for children to thrive. Working together, we can make Oxford County a place for kids to grow and reach their full potential.
