Tampon Tuesday

This year marks the 7th annual event, presented by United Way Oxford’s Women United

Period poverty is real and it’s a problem all across Canada and locally. It’s prioritizing food over tampons or housing and bills over menstrual supplies in order to survive each month when you’re struggling to make ends meet. Menstrual hygiene products are one of the most requested, yet least donated items at food banks, and with the cost of living on the rise, these type of supports are so important to help families and individuals who are facing poverty or limited budgets.

It is estimated that Canadian women spend up to $6,000 in their lifetime on menstrual hygiene products. Understandably, low-income individuals find it difficult to budget for this monthly necessity, and we believe that nobody should have to choose between feeding their family and being able to afford menstrual hygiene products. Yet far too many individuals – especially those living in poverty – simply can’t afford them.

That’s why United Way hosts a Tampon Tuesday event – to collect menstrual hygiene products to share with organizations in our community! Shoppers Drug Mart locations across the county will be accepting donations and we will wrap up with an in-person event on Tuesday, March 5. Some of the incredible changes we have seen since this initiative started 7 years ago are the conversations taking place around Period Poverty, and the availability of free, accessible products.

We need your help and support! How you can get involved:

  • Host a collection drive at your workplace or with a group that you are involved with.
  • Bring your friends and coworkers with your collection to the networking event on Tuesday, March 5th between 5-7 PM at Kelsey’s Roadhouse in Woodstock or Tillsonburg, and enjoy some light refreshments and engaging conversation.
  • Donate cash now online on our website or at the event. www.unitedwayoxford.ca/donate.

Last year’s Tampon Tuesday event brought in over 1,400 boxes of hygiene products and supported dozens of local organizations. Thank you to Shoppers Drug Marts across the county, Kelsey’s Roadhouse in Woodstock and Tillsonburg, volunteers, community, and Women United members who make this event possible. Reach out to Amanda Kreiger for more information, to set up a donation drive at your location, or for volunteering opportunities and ways to get involved.
